What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) is a common problem affecting the armpits, hands and feet, and a major cause if distress and anxiety from an appearance perspective. It’s often known as ‘the silent handicap’ and many people live with it not knowing their treatment options.

Humans have up to 4 million sweat glands distributed over the body. Eccrine glands secrete an odourless, clear fluid that serves to aid in the regulation of body temperature by allowing heat loss by evaporation. These glands are in higher density on the soles of the feet. Apocrine sweat glands are located in the axilla and genital regions—and produce a thick, odorless fluid that undergoes bacterial decomposition, leading to substances with strong odors, often known as ‘B.O’

What can be done?

Anti-Wrinkle injections can help relieve sweating in all these areas through blocking nerve control of sweating therefore improving an individuals appearance by stopping visible sweat patches on clothing which may be cause for distress and embarrassment.

The treatment is quick, relatively painless and extremely effective in helping with an individuals appearance and can last between 6-8 months.

Frequently asked questions

Botox for hyperhidrosis is most commonly used to treat excessive sweating of the underarms.

It can also be used in other areas, such as the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, although treatment suitability will depend on the individual area and your consultation.

Botox can significantly reduce excessive sweating in many people.

Results vary between individuals, but a substantial reduction in sweating can often be achieved in treated areas. Botox does not permanently stop the sweat glands from functioning; instead, it temporarily reduces their activity.

A reduction in sweating may begin to become noticeable within several days following treatment.

The full effect can take approximately 2 weeks to develop. Your practitioner will advise you when you should expect to see the maximum effect.

The effects of Botox for hyperhidrosis are temporary.

Many people experience a significant reduction in sweating for approximately 4–6 months, although this can vary depending on the individual, the treatment area and the severity of sweating.

Treatment can be repeated when the effects begin to wear off.

The treatment involves a number of small injections into the affected area.

For underarm treatment, most clients tolerate the injections well. A topical or local anaesthetic may be considered where appropriate to make treatment more comfortable.

Treatment of the palms and soles can be more sensitive and may require additional measures to improve comfort.

There is generally minimal downtime following Botox treatment for hyperhidrosis.

You may experience some temporary redness, swelling, tenderness or bruising at the injection sites.

Most people can return to their normal activities relatively quickly, although you may be advised to avoid strenuous exercise, excessive heat and certain activities for a short period following treatment.

As with any injectable treatment, there are potential risks and side effects.

These can include temporary pain, bruising, swelling or tenderness at the injection sites.

Depending on the area treated, temporary muscle weakness can occur. With treatment of the palms, there is a possibility of temporary weakness of the hand muscles.

Your practitioner will discuss the potential risks and benefits with you before treatment.

Botox does not cure hyperhidrosis permanently.

It temporarily reduces the activity of the sweat glands in the treated area, providing relief from excessive sweating while the effects of the treatment remain.

Repeated treatment may be required to maintain the results.

Some people may experience compensatory sweating, where increased sweating occurs in another area of the body after treatment.

This is more commonly associated with some other treatments for hyperhidrosis and is not inevitable following Botox.

Your practitioner will discuss potential side effects and your individual suitability during your consultation.

Botox may be suitable for many adults experiencing excessive sweating, but it is not appropriate for everyone.

A consultation is required to assess your symptoms, medical history, medications and the area you wish to treat.

Certain medical conditions, medications, pregnancy or breastfeeding may mean that treatment is not appropriate.  Your practitioner here at Asthetk London will discuss all contraindications to treatment during your consultation and taking your medical history.

Botox for hyperhidrosis can be repeated when the effects begin to wear off and excessive sweating returns.

The timing varies between individuals, but many people experience results for approximately 4–6 months.

Your practitioner will assess your response and advise when repeat treatment may be appropriate.
