Dermal fillers are one of the most popular aesthetic treatments available today. As our faces age, we tend to lose volume in a very predictable way, and our faces begin to sag, creating deep furrows, tear troughs, marionette lines, and folds, and jowls start to form.
Dermal fillers work to replace this volume that has been lost using a variety of natural molecules that are usually in a gel form that are injected under the skin.

Movement of the facial muscle is inevitable and expresses our feelings and emotions. This movement creates what we know as ‘dynamic lines’ which are the lines and wrinkles created when facial expressions are made. In youth, these lines simply disappear when movement is not being made due to good Collagen and Elastin production.
As we age, our natural production of Collagen and Elastin slows down and the stability of these compounds begin to breakdown. This can also be caused by other factors such as smoking, alcohol and sun expsoure (UVA / UVB / Infrared) to name a few. With this in mind and the continual muscle movement, eventually the skin leaves an imprint of the dynamic lines which become visible when the face is at rest and no movement is being made; these lines are what we term ‘static lines’.

Anti-wrinkle Injections, have been used for decades now in order to reverse the visibility of certain facial lines such as the forehead, crows feet and frown lines (1). These injections are made up of Botulinum Toxin A, a purified protein, which inhibits the brains signals instructing the muscle to move therefore reducing the intensity of movement; therefore reducing the intensity of the ‘dynamic lines’.
By minimising dynamic lines, you are in turn preventing further creation or worsening of ‘static lines’, and allowing the skin to rejuvenate and plump out the static lines using the body’s own natural production of collagen and elastin. The effects are a wrinkle and line free face, although results can vary between clients.
As with any treatment there is risk and Anti Wrinkle Injections are no different. Whilst anti-wrinkle treatments are generally safe, there are some risks which need to be highlighted to anybody considering them.
These risks can range anything from Allergy, Asymetry to an ‘Eyelid ptosis’ (Drooping eyelid). However the important thing to to note is that Anti Wrinkle Injections are not permanent and it is extremely unlikely that there would be any long terms effects from treatment. There are also some smaller side effects, however our Aesthetic Doctor will discuss these during a full face to face consultation and will also give you the opportunity to ask as many questions that you may have to help inform your choices.
Most individuals report minimal discomfort during anti-wrinkle injections. The needles used are very fine, and some clinics offer numbing cream to further reduce any potential discomfort. The procedure is generally well-tolerated.
